The Story

Inspired by the classic Chinese legend of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea, the film reimagines the Eight Immortals before they became gods — eight ordinary mortals: Lü Dongbin, Zhongli Quan, He Xiangu, Li Tieguai, Han Xiangzi, Cao Guojiu, Lan Caihe and Zhang Guolao. Posing as immortals to pull off an audacious deception, they outwit powerful gods with wit and folk wisdom, proving that mortals can stand shoulder to shoulder with the divine — and earn the name 'the Eight Immortals'.

The Eight Immortals are the most beloved group of deities in Chinese folk religion, with a fixed roster — Li Tieguai, Zhongli Quan, Lü Dongbin, Zhang Guolao, He Xiangu, Lan Caihe, Han Xiangzi and Cao Guojiu — matching the film's eight leads one to one. The name appears as early as the Han dynasty, the roster was fixed by the Ming-era Jiajing reign, and the Wanli-era novel Journey to the East codified the canon.
