Crosses CN¥1B; summer tops CN¥7B

CGTN reported that China's summer box office surpassed the 7 billion yuan milestone (reported as about US$1.03 billion) on the first day of August, underpinned by a 22-consecutive-day streak in which daily box-office revenues consistently topped 100 million yuan (about US$14.8 million); the July market boom was anchored by a "dual-engine" dynamic driven by Stephen Chow's comedy Kung Fu Soccer — leading the year-to-date charts with over 2.1 billion yuan (about US$311 million) — and the breakout mythological animation All Wishes Come True!, which crossed the 1 billion yuan mark (about US$148 million) while earning widespread critical acclaim.[1]

Variety reported that All Wishes Come True! moved to second place at the mainland China box office during the July 31-August 2 weekend, collecting US$31.8 million and bringing its cumulative total to US$171.5 million since its July 18 debut; Kung Fu Soccer placed third in its fourth frame with a cumulative haul of US$318.5 million.[2]

Bastille Post Global reported that China's total box office revenue for 2026 exceeded 23.1 billion yuan (about US$3.41 billion) as of Sunday night, August 2, with summer box office revenue surpassing 7.4 billion yuan (about US$1.10 billion) by Monday morning, according to box office tracker Dengta; the report confirmed that the film's producers have set a global rollout starting August 13.[3]

CGTN quoted sci-fi director Frant Gwo (The Wandering Earth), who praised the film's craftsmanship after a private screening: "I could literally feel the goosebumps leaving the cinema – and it wasn't a metaphor," Gwo remarked. "Chinese animated cinema has truly arrived on the global stage, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with top international productions."[1]

The report added that first-time feature director Mu Zhengyang revealed he personally acted out nearly every character during pre-production to streamline team communication, a grassroots efficiency Gwo commended as highly pragmatic, and noted that more than 40 new domestic and international releases are poised to maintain the momentum through the end of the season, including Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey slated for mid-August.[1]
