China Daily HK review: a "blessedly novel and modern" heist take on the Eight Immortals

Reviewing the trio of animated family films reaching Hong Kong screens this weekend, China Daily's Amy Mullins wrote that debuting director Mu Zhengyang's All Wishes Come True! puts a fresh spin on the legendary immortals of Chinese mythology, and that judging from its "surprise $200 million-plus box-office haul," most audiences are willing to lean into the "Avengers-meets-immortals on a heist job conceit" of this revisionist interpretation.[1]

Mullins praised the "fun, frothy, painterly 3D imaging" of Zhongli Quan as a master thief, Lyu Dongbin as the keeper of the Yu Xu Lantern and He Xiangu as a master swordswoman, and of the ragtag mortals plotting to rob the Penglai vault disguised as immortals, calling the film's vision "a blessedly novel and modern one."[1]

The review noted that Mu's vision ultimately aligns with the community-forward, redemptive storytelling that powered Ne Zha (2019) and Nobody (2025) to success; the 143-minute film, rated IIA, opened in Hong Kong on August 20.[1]
